WHAT ABOUT FUTURE? (PART ONE)

Here is where we are going to make future of healthcare industry clear…

From digital networks to wearables, the health care industry is undergoing massive technological changes. Here are 10 types of innovations changing its future.

The health care industry will see a 21% increase in IT jobs by 2020, according to research by the [1]University of Chicago. Across all health care sectors, there is a demand for creative, thoughtful uses of health informatics, mobile technology, cloud systems, and digital diagnostics.

In this post ( fisr Part ) we are going to review the fisrt 5 out of 10 types of tech that are changing the course of health care :

  1. Digital diagnostics

Making health care more accessible includes providing digital diagnostics options for people who need it, especially those who can’t get to a doctor’s office. This is one of the main themes of digital health. One example of digital diagnostics is Neurotrack, a software-based Alzheimer’s diagnostic test that can detect impairments on the hippocampus (the first area of the brain to be affected by the disease) by evaluating eye movement.

Here is a video that “Elli kaplan” CEO of this technology talking about Neurotrack :

  1. The cloud

According to recent research by [2]Skyhigh Networks, more than 13% of cloud services in health care are considered high-risk for security breaches, and 77% of them are medium-risk. Cloud services provide a lot of benefits for medical providers, especially in under-developed or rural areas, but there is definite risk involved. The research showed that there are 944 cloud services in use across healthcare providers, and 53% of employees use at least three devices at work.

  1. Ultra-fast scans

[3]GE showcased its breakthrough ultra-fast CT scanner earlier this year, which can capture a still image of a heart in one beat. The company said that according to research, about 60% of patients have heart rates of higher than 60 beats per minute and are turned away from scans because their heart beats too fast to scan. With this Revolution CT, doctors can see specific areas of the heart that they could not before.

  1. Wearables

Wearable technology is going to play a huge role in health care in years to come. The Consumer Electronics Association reports that sales of fitness trackers and smart watches will reach $1 billion this year. But monitoring fitness is only the beginning.

  1. Health informatics

More than half of US hospitals use some type of electronic records system, but only 6% meet all the federal mandates, according to a recent study out of the University of Michigan. According to researchers at the University of Chicago, 50% of health care dollars are wasted on inefficient record keeping processes. Electronic records have been shown to save large hospitals anywhere between $37 and $59 million. It streamlines the medical care process and lowers malpractice claims, and increases coordination between providers. The federal government set a mandate to have some electronic system in place by this year.

Big data in health informatic

Here is the expertly explanation of this concept :

Development in the fields of biomedical and health informatics are driving major expansion in big-data, not only because of the sheer volume of information generated, but also due to the complexity, diversity, and the rich context of the data that encompasses discoveries from basic sciences to clinical translation, to health systems and large-scale population studies on determinants of health.

In promoting big-data as a source of innovation in healthcare and accelerating the translational pathways from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside, this special issue includes a collection of papers addressing some of medical and health informatics challenges related to big data. Papers submitted cover a range of topics, from bioinformatics, imaging informatics, sensor informatics, medical informatics to public health informatics. They also include initiatives that enable use of big-data analytics in health systems for improved clinical decision making, enhanced efficiency of care provision, policy development and policy implementation.

now we want to understand the meaning of it as simple as we can…first watch this video please :

According to the video types of information gathered from patient  are :

  • 1)Information the doctor collects such as : Heigh, weigh, blood pressure, cholesterol , …
  • 2)Sociodemographic data such as : name, gender, age, education, marriage status, …
  • 3)Informations that wearable technologies collect such as : exercise, sleep, food
  • 4)pharmatical and research data : Molecules, proteins, pharmaceuticals

As the target population grows, the data size grows => Big Data

But how can big data be used?

-Clinical Decision Support System

-Electronic Health Records

-Personal Health Records

-Remote Consultation

-Personalized Medicine

-Preventative Applications

What are Big Data challenges in healthcare informatics?

  • 1)Data security
  • 2)Data ownership => who owns the data?
  • 3)Which data should we pick out of data pool?
  • 4)Data storage

buzzz!

We recently talked about Ihealth technology types ( including EHR, PHR, … ) Here is what we found in news about this field!

Hack of podiatry office puts 40,000 patient records and PHI at risk!

Stamford Podiatry Group notified patients that cybercriminals breached its EHR database for nearly two months and could have accessed personally identifiable information and personal health information.

A Connecticut podiatry office has notified 40,491 patients that cybercriminals may have compromised their protected health information by accessing its EHR database.

1Stamford Podiatry Group P.C. said in a letter to its patients that an unauthorized third party gained access to its computer systems February 22, 2016. The breach lasted until April 14, 2016, when it was discovered and closed.

EHR data potentially accessed includes names, addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, telephone numbers, Social Security numbers, health insurance information, names of treating and referring physicians, and patients’ gender and marital status. Medical histories, diagnoses, and details of treatments were also stored in the EHR database and may have been accessed as well.

“Although we have not been able to confirm that your personal information was accessed and copied, we have not been able to rule out that possibility and encourage you to take protective measures,” Stamford Podiatry wrote.

The group hired external computer forensics experts to assist with the investigation and has since retained them to provide continued cybersecurity assistance.

Stamford Podiatry Group explained that an investigation determined there is no evidence to suggest that data was actually viewed or copied and it has not received any reports of patients’ information being used inappropriately.

To help protect patients’ identity, Stamford Podiatry Group has offered all affected patients a free one-year enrollment in the Equifax Credit Watch credit monitoring service. The service provides regular notifications and alerts, 24/7 customer service, credit monitoring services and insurance against identity theft.

Stamford Podiatry also recommended that patients monitor their accounts carefully for signs of fraudulent activity.

Types of health information technology(2)

The other essential elements of the healthcare IT infrastructure are the 1) personal health record (PHR), which is an individual’s self-maintained health record, An electronic application through which individuals can access, manage and share their health information, and that of others for whom they are authorized, in a private, secure, and confidential environment.

the PHR is a tool that can be helpful in maintaining health and wellness as well as a tool to help with illness that the term patient implies.

There are several possible approaches to creating a functional PHR, In the simplest approach, an individual may create his or her PHR using commercially available applications, ranging from stand-alone systems to Web-based applications. The patient can enter and access his or her health data through such systems. In its simplest form, the PHR is a stand-alone application that does not connect with any other system.

and

2) Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) : which oversees communications among the other elements (EHR & PHR) and unifies them geographically. A RHIO is a type of health information exchange, which is a group of healthcare facilities that enter an interoperability pact and agree to share data between their various health IT systems.

Types of health information technology

first we are going to describe the central component of Health IT :

The electronic health record (EHR) : is the central component of the health IT infrastructure. An EHR or electronic medical record is an individual’s official, digital health record and is shared among multiple facilities and agencies.

for a wide variety of health care institutions to share medical data with other health care providers, with such groups as health information exchanges and regional health information organizations, and with patients themselves.

To that end, the federal government has put financial incentive programs in place that encourage hospitals and health care providers to adopt EHR technology by the end of 2014. Beyond financial incentives, however, implementation of EHR technology is seen as a way to improve clinical workflows, data analysis and overall patient care.

An electronic health record is a digital version of an individual’s medical data. It is collected and managed by multiple authorized health care providers, and can be exchanged electronically among them. It consists of information gathered by organizations over a period of time – it’s often referred to as a longitudinal record — rather than information from a single visit to a doctor or hospital. It includes demographic data, medical history and clinical information, such as laboratory, radiology and pharmacy data.

Ihealth deffinition

Health information technology (health IT or HIT) is the area of IT involving the design, development, creation, use and maintenance of information systems for the healthcare industry In today’s world, technology plays an important role in every industry as well as in our personal lives. Out of all of the industries that technology plays a crucial role in, healthcare is definitely one of the most important. This merger is responsible for improving and saving countless lives all around the world. information technology has made significant contributions to our world, namely in the medical industry. With the increased use of electronic medical records , telehealth services, and mobile technologies like tablets and smart phones, physicians and patients are both seeing the benefits that these new medical technologies are bringing. With more and more hospitals and practices using medical technology like mobile devices on the job, physicians can now have access to any type of information they need – from drug information, research and studies, patient history or records, and more – within mere seconds. And, with the ability to effortlessly carry these mobile devices around with them throughout the day, they are never far from the information they need.

A 2006 report by the “ 1 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality” broad and consistent utilization of HIT will :
